Tragedy in North Kashmir: Six Injured in Violent Multi-Vehicle Collision at Tangdhar Market

Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir — In a distressing turn of events on Friday, the peaceful atmosphere of the main market in Tangdhar, located in the frontier district of Kupwara, was shattered by a high-impact road accident. The incident, which involved a passenger cab and two stationary vehicles, resulted in injuries to six individuals, including the driver of the primary vehicle.

The Incident: A Chain Reaction of Collisions
According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the accident occurred during the peak hours of the day when the market was relatively crowded. A passenger vehicle, identified as an Ertiga bearing the registration number JK09D-6848, was moving through the market area when the driver reportedly lost control over the steering.

In a split second, the out-of-control cab veered off its path and collided violently with two other vehicles parked in the vicinity—an Alto 800 (registration number JK01L-2792) and a Scorpio (registration number HR26CA-4265). The momentum of the vehicle was so high that it finally came to a halt only after crashing into a nearby concrete wall. The sound of the impact drew a large crowd of shopkeepers and commuters who rushed to assist those trapped inside the mangled remains of the vehicles.

Rescue Operations and Medical Assistance
Immediately following the crash, a wave of local volunteers and nearby shopkeepers initiated a rescue operation. The doors of the Ertiga had to be pried open to evacuate the passengers.
Authorities were quickly notified, and the injured were rushed to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Tangdhar. Medical officers at the facility acted promptly to stabilize the victims, most of whom were suffering from shock and multiple physical injuries due to the impact.

Identification of the Victims
The administration has released the identities of the six individuals who are currently undergoing treatment. They include residents from various parts of the Karnah and Bhaderkote regions:
Shabir Ahmad Changree (43), son of Yaqoob Changree, a resident of Bhaderkote (The driver of the Ertiga).
Kulsooma Bano, daughter of Ghulam Yameen, also from Bhaderkote.
Naseem Ahmed, son of Mehar Din, hailing from the Seemari area.
Ramandeep Kaur, wife of Kuljeet Singh, resident of Tarbuni.
Kuljeet Singh, son of Moti Singh, also from Tarbuni.
Syed Aijaz, son of Mehboob Hussain, a resident of Gundi Saydian, Karnah.

While the medical staff is providing the best possible care, the long-term prognosis of the injured is being closely monitored.

Concerns Over Road Safety in Frontier Regions
This accident has once again brought the spotlight back on road safety challenges in the hilly terrains of North Kashmir. Tangdhar, being a high-altitude area with narrow market passages, often sees heavy traffic congestion.
Local residents have frequently raised concerns about the need for stricter traffic regulations and better road maintenance in the Kupwara district to prevent such mishaps. Whether this specific accident was a result of a mechanical failure, such as brake failure, or human error is currently a matter of investigation by the local police.

Conclusion and Official Stance
The local police have registered a case regarding the incident and are recording statements from the witnesses. For now, the focus remains on the recovery of the injured.
