Kashmir’s Heart Beats for Iran: Why Locals are Donating Gold and Savings
By Great x Kashmir News Desk
The historical and emotional bond between Kashmir and Iran has once again come to the forefront. As Iran faces a difficult humanitarian crisis due to the ongoing conflict, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have stepped forward with incredible generosity. From gold jewelry to children’s piggy banks, the valley is witnessing a massive wave of donations to help those in need.
The Spirit of Sacrifice on Eid
This year, the celebrations of Eid-ul-Fitr in Kashmir were different. Instead of spending only on festivities, many families in Srinagar, Budgam, and Baramulla chose to donate to Iranian relief funds.
Our reporters observed heart-touching scenes where women donated their gold earrings—some even wedding gifts—to support displaced families. In areas like Zadibal, elderly residents were seen contributing traditional copper utensils, which are usually saved for daughters’ weddings. It is a clear message: the pain of a daughter in Iran is felt by a mother in Kashmir.
“Little Iran” and a 600-Year-Old Bond
Kashmir has historically been called “Iran-e-Sagheer” (Little Iran). This connection dates back to the 14th century when Sufi saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani came from Iran to Kashmir, bringing with him Islam, Persian art, and craftsmanship.
Today, that centuries-old link is visible not just in our architecture or language, but in the empathy shown by the public. It isn’t just one community; people across different backgrounds and even political figures have contributed their salaries and resources to this cause.
Massive Contributions from the Valley
According to local estimates, the value of donations from Kashmir has reached significant numbers, including cash, livestock, and vehicles. Even children like nine-year-old Zainab have handed over their years of savings to help children across the border.
The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi also acknowledged this support, thanking the people of Kashmir for standing in solidarity during these testing times. Reports suggest that a major portion of the total humanitarian aid from India has been contributed by the people of the Valley.
A Note on Safe Donations
While the spirit of giving is high, local authorities have advised citizens to be careful with their contributions. To ensure that your help reaches the right people in Iran, it is recommended to use official channels or verified embassy accounts.
At Great x Kashmir, we believe this movement shows the true nature of our people—always ready to share what they love with those who are suffering.
