Over 400 Apple Trees Vandalized Overnight in Kulgam; Growers Seek Justice

KULGAM: A wave of shock and resentment has gripped the Kaharwat village of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district after more than 400 apple trees were found chopped down in a private orchard on Sunday morning. The heart-wrenching incident has left the local farming community in deep distress, facing massive financial setbacks.

The Incident
According to local residents, the attack took place under the cover of darkness. Unidentified individuals entered the orchard during the night and used sharp tools to vandalize the trees, leaving trunks severed and fruit-bearing branches scattered across the ground. The affected growers discovered the destruction at dawn, describing the scene as a devastating blow to their years of hard work.

Economic Impact
The orchard was a primary source of livelihood for the family, having produced approximately 80 crates of high-quality apples just last season. Horticulture is the backbone of the rural economy in South Kashmir, and such acts of sabotage threaten the stability of the entire sector. Since apple trees require years of nurturing before they reach maturity, the victims are looking at long-term economic consequences.

Call for Action
The local villagers have expressed serious concerns over the safety of their property, fearing that similar incidents could target other farmers in the area. The affected family has made an urgent appeal to the District Commissioner and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kulgam to identify the culprits and ensure they face strict legal action.

Police Investigation
Taking note of the incident, the local police have officially taken cognizance of the matter. An investigation has been launched to track down the perpetrators. Authorities have assured the public that necessary action will be taken according to the law once the facts of the case are established.
The widespread destruction has prompted calls from the community for better protection of the horticulture sector, which remains the main source of income for thousands of families in the region.
